Tax Season 2012 FAQs Entry 1

When can I file my 2011 tax return?

Theoretically, if you have all of the information that you need in order to file your return, including certain 1099 and W2 forms if you are employed or are self employed or not employed (including student or retiree) and all all the records needed to calculate your income and tax liability and choose not file your return electronically, you can mail your return in right now.  Keep in mind that if you choose to mail the return, it can take up to six to eight weeks to process.

For those that choose to file electronically,  the IRS will start accepting electronic returns on January 17th, 2012.  The processing time of an electronically filed return is up to three weeks.
