Tax Season 2012 FAQS: Entry 2
I think I might owe taxes but I’m not sure and want to find out before I file my return to prevent my refund from being offset. Who can I call to find out?
If you owe or think you may owe the IRS, you can call them at 1-800-829-1040 between the hours of 7am to 7 pm local time.
If you owe or think you may owe non IRS debt such as child support, student loans, military, food stamps, or state tax debt, you can call the Financial Management Service at 1-800-304-3107.
Live representatives are available between the hours of 7:30am to 5:00pm CST. Automated services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Follow the prompts through the automated system and you will be told whether your IRS refund will be offset, the name of the agency, and the phone number.
Keep in mind that once an agency registers your name and social security number with the Financial Management Service for a debt, the IRS does not question the validity of that debt. It is up to you the individual to resolve any disputed debt with the agency before filing your return.
If you disputed a debt, or paid a debt, as the FMS database updates on a daily basis, make sure that you contact the Financial Management Service again before filing your return to make sure that your account is cleared.
You should take the same steps in contacting the IRS regarding any debt you owed to the Internal Revenue Service that you paid in full.
